About Marlin Stuart
Marlin Henry Stuart was a right-handed pitcher born in 1918 in Paragould, Arkansas, who signed with the St. Louis Browns organization in 1940 and began his pro career at Class D with the Mayfield Browns of the KITTY League. A sandlot product who had never worn spikes, he famously talked his manager into letting him pitch the final game of the 1940 season barefoot, beating Fulton 5-2 in seven innings with 11 strikeouts and telling reporters he pitched better feeling "the diamond dust oozing between my toes." He reached the majors relatively late, debuting for the Detroit Tigers on April 26, 1949, at age 30, and in 1950 threw a perfect game for the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens. Used mostly in relief, Stuart pitched eight big-league seasons (1949-1954) for the Tigers, St. Louis Browns/Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees, compiling a 23-17 record with a 4.65 ERA, 185 strikeouts and 12 saves over 196 games. This 1952 Topps card, from the fourth series, is his rookie card.
