About Matt Batts
Matthew Daniel Batts, a right-handed catcher born October 16, 1921, in San Antonio, Texas, signed with the Boston Red Sox in 1942 out of Baylor University, where scout "Uncle Billy" Disch landed him after his standout American Legion play in San Antonio. He debuted with Boston on September 10, 1947, and went on to play parts of ten major-league seasons through 1956 as a dependable backup backstop for the Red Sox, St. Louis Browns, Detroit Tigers, Chicago White Sox, and Cincinnati Reds. Batts appeared in 546 games and batted .269 with 26 home runs and 219 RBI, posting his finest full year in 1953 with Detroit, when he hit .278 as the Tigers' primary catcher. His signature moment came in a Detroit uniform, the club shown on this card: on August 25, 1952, he caught Virgil Trucks' second no-hitter of that season. Batts also handled Satchel Paige while with the Browns, and after baseball he ran a successful printing business in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, before his death on July 14, 2013, at age 91.
