About Jerry Priddy

Jerry Priddy was a right-handed second baseman signed out of Southern California by Yankees scout Bill Essick. In the New York farm system he formed a celebrated double-play combination with future Hall of Famer Phil Rizzuto, starring at Kansas City before reaching the majors in 1941. Over 11 big-league seasons he played for the New York Yankees (1941-1942), Washington Senators (1943, 1946-1947), St. Louis Browns (1948-1949) and Detroit Tigers (1950-1953), the club shown on this card. Renowned for his glove, Priddy had his finest all-around year in 1950 with Detroit, hitting .277 with 13 home runs, 104 runs and 95 walks while setting major-league fielding records by turning 150 double plays in a season and starting five double plays in a single game. He retired with a .265 career average, 1,252 hits, 61 home runs and 541 RBI. This card carries the set's black-back/red-back color variation. Priddy died in 1980.
