About Cliff Mapes
Clifford Franklin Mapes (1922-1996), a big 6-foot-3 outfielder from Sutherland, Nebraska, batted left and threw right across five major-league seasons. He debuted with the New York Yankees on April 20, 1948, backing up an outfield that included Joe DiMaggio and Tommy Henrich before earning regular duty. Mapes was a two-time World Series champion, winning with the Yankees in 1949 (as their starting right fielder against Brooklyn) and 1950. Traded to the St. Louis Browns in mid-1951, he finished with Detroit in 1952, retiring with a .242 average, 38 home runs, and 172 RBI over 459 games. His enduring claim to fame is uniform-number lore: Mapes wore No. 3 until it was retired for Babe Ruth, then switched to No. 7, which was handed to Mickey Mantle after Mapes was dealt away, making him the only Yankee to wear both legends' numbers. This 1952 Topps card, from the second series, pictures him with the Tigers in his final big-league year.
