About Bill Kennedy
William Aulton "Lefty" Kennedy (1921-1983) was a left-handed pitcher whose legend was built in the minors. Born in Carnesville, Georgia, he entered pro ball in the Yankees' system in 1939, but his defining season came in 1946 with the Class-D Rocky Mount Rocks: 28-3 with a 1.03 ERA and a staggering 456 strikeouts in 280 innings — still among the highest single-season totals in professional baseball history, including one 24-strikeout game. He debuted in the majors in 1948 with Cleveland, was quickly traded to the St. Louis Browns for Sam Zoldak (narrowly missing the Indians' World Series title), and pitched over eight seasons for the Browns, White Sox, Red Sox and Cincinnati, finishing 15-28 with a 4.73 ERA and 256 strikeouts. His best big-league year was 1952 with the Chicago White Sox shown here, posting a 2.80 ERA in a league-leading 47 appearances. This Series 2 card falls in the set's more available range, outside the scarce high numbers.
