About Orestes Minoso
Saturnino Orestes Armas "Minnie" Minoso, born in 1924 in Perico, Cuba, broke into pro ball with the Negro Leagues' New York Cubans (1946-1948) before signing with the Cleveland Indians and debuting on April 19, 1949 as the first Black Cuban in the American or National Leagues. Traded to the Chicago White Sox on May 1, 1951, he became the first Black player in franchise history and homered in his first at-bat, then hit .326 with 31 steals to finish runner-up for AL Rookie of the Year — the season captured on this card, his Topps rookie. A left fielder over parts of 17 big-league seasons (mostly with the White Sox, plus stints with Cleveland, St. Louis, and Washington), the nine-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner (1957, 1959, 1960) led the AL in stolen bases three times, triples three times, and in hits, doubles, and being hit by pitch. Nicknamed "The Cuban Comet" for his speed, he batted .299 with 2,113 hits, 195 home runs, and 216 steals, and famously suited up across five decades in symbolic 1976 and 1980 comebacks. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2022.
