About Eddie Robinson
A left-handed first baseman from Paris, Texas, Eddie Robinson signed out of the minors with Knoxville in 1939 and reached the majors with the Cleveland Indians in September 1942 before losing three seasons (1943-45) to U.S. Navy service in World War II, during which a leg injury nearly ended his career. Returning as Cleveland's regular first baseman by 1947, he hit .300 in the 1948 World Series as the Indians beat the Boston Braves for the title, the highlight of a 13-season career. Traded to the Chicago White Sox in May 1950, Robinson enjoyed his finest year in 1951, batting .282 with 29 home runs, a club record that stood nearly 30 years, and 117 RBI while finishing third in the American League in both categories. A four-time All-Star (1949, 1951, 1952, 1953) who started at first base for the AL in the 1949 and 1952 Midsummer Classics, he played for seven AL franchises and retired with a .268 average, 172 home runs, and 723 RBI over 1,315 games. Ted Williams called him "the most underrated and best clutch hitter I ever played against." Robinson later became a long-time executive and general manager, and when he died in 2021 at age 100 he was the oldest living former major leaguer.
