1952 Topps #33 Warren Spahn
1952 Topps #33 Warren Spahn

About Warren Spahn
First signed by the Boston Braves and a pro debut in the PONY League, left-hander Warren Spahn reached the majors with the Braves in 1942 before wartime service interrupted his career; a combat engineer in WWII, he earned a Purple Heart and battlefield commission, fighting at the Battle of the Bulge and the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen. Returning in 1946, he starred for the Boston (1942, 1946-1952) and Milwaukee Braves (1953-1964), with brief 1965 stops for the Mets and Giants. Baseball's winningest left-hander, he went 363-245 with a 3.09 ERA, 2,583 strikeouts, and 382 complete games over 21 seasons, posting 13 twenty-win years. A 17-time All-Star, he won the 1957 Cy Young Award, led the league in wins eight times and in ERA three times, threw two no-hitters (1960, 1961), and anchored the Braves' 1957 World Series champions. Nicknamed "Hooks" for the shape of his nose after a broken-nose injury, Spahn was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1973 on the first ballot. His card is #33 in Topps' landmark 1952 debut set, part of the widely printed low-number Series 1 issued with both black-back and red-back variations.
