About Sid Gordon
A Brooklyn native from the Brownsville section, Sid Gordon was signed as an amateur free agent by New York Giants scout George Mack in January 1938 and worked his way up through the minors before debuting in the majors in 1941. A right-handed slugger who played left field, third base, and first base, he spent 13 big-league seasons with the Giants (1941-43, 1946-49, 1955), the Boston/Milwaukee Braves (1950-53), and the Pittsburgh Pirates (1954-55). Gordon was a two-time National League All-Star (1948, 1949); his breakout 1948 campaign saw him hit a career-high 30 home runs, drive in 107 runs, rank third in the NL in slugging (.537), and finish fourth in MVP voting. He hit .283 for his career with 202 home runs and 805 RBI, and drew 731 walks against just 356 strikeouts. On July 31, 1949 he homered twice in a single inning, tying a major-league record, and in 1950 he clubbed four grand slams to tie the then-record. Beloved in Brooklyn even while starring for the Giants, he was traded to the Braves in December 1949 in the deal that brought Alvin Dark and Eddie Stanky to New York. Nicknamed the "Solid Man" (a term applied to him by writer Harold Ribalow in The Jew in American Sports), Gordon ranks among the top home-run hitters in Jewish baseball history. He died of a heart attack in 1975 while playing softball in New York's Central Park. His card appears in the fifth series of the landmark 1952 Topps set, the issue best known for the iconic Mickey Mantle #311 and its scarce high-number run (#311-407).
