About Roy Hartsfield
Roy Thomas "Specs" Hartsfield was a right-handed second baseman whose card is best remembered for what came after his playing days. A native of the Atlanta area (born October 25, 1925; died 2011), he signed with the hometown Atlanta Crackers of the Southern Association in 1943 at age 17, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and earned his nickname "Specs" while training as an optical technician at Great Lakes. He broke out with a monster minor-league season, winning American Association MVP honors with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1949 (.317 with 203 hits). Hartsfield reached the majors with the Boston Braves and spent his entire three-year big-league career there (1950-1952), debuting April 28, 1950 and earning Sporting News Rookie All-Star recognition that year. Over 265 games he batted .273 with 13 home runs and 59 RBI. His deeper legacy came in the dugout: after nearly two decades in the Dodgers organization and back-to-back Pacific Coast League titles managing the Hawaii Islanders (1975-1976), he was named the first manager in Toronto Blue Jays history, running the expansion club from 1977 to 1979 (166-318). This #264 sits in Topps' fifth series, well below the scarce #311-407 high numbers, so it remains among the more attainable 1952 cards for collectors.
