About Harry Brecheen
A crafty, screwball-throwing left-hander, Harry Brecheen was acquired by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1938 and, after debuting in 1940, spent the bulk of his career in St. Louis from 1943 through 1952 before a final 1953 season with the crosstown Browns. Over 12 seasons he went 133-92 with a sparkling 2.92 ERA and 901 strikeouts, and a two-time All-Star (1947, 1948). His finest year came in 1948, when he posted a 20-7 record and led the National League in ERA (2.24), strikeouts (149), and shutouts (7). Nicknamed "Harry the Cat" for his soft hands and quickness fielding his position, he was a postseason legend: he won World Series titles with the Cardinals in 1944 and 1946, and in the 1946 upset of the Red Sox became the first left-hander to win three games in a single World Series, capping it with two innings of relief in Game Seven. His 0.83 career World Series ERA stood as the record from 1946 to 1976. After retiring he served as the Baltimore Orioles' pitching coach, shaping the staff that swept the Dodgers in the 1966 World Series. This card appears in the fifth series, well ahead of the scarce #311-407 high-number run.
