About George Munger
George David "Red" Munger, born October 4, 1918, in Houston, Texas (d. 1996), was a right-handed pitcher who signed into the St. Louis Cardinals organization and reached the majors on May 1, 1943. The 6-foot-2 righthander pitched ten big-league seasons (1943-44, 1946-56), mostly for the Cardinals with a later stint for the Pittsburgh Pirates, finishing 77-56 with a 3.83 ERA and 564 strikeouts over 273 games. His finest showing came in 1944, when he went 11-3 with a 1.34 ERA before U.S. Army service in World War II cut short his season and cost him the 1944 World Series. A three-time National League All-Star (1944, 1947, 1949), Munger returned to help the Cardinals win the 1946 World Series, throwing a complete-game 12-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox in Game 4. This card appears in the set's second series, outside the color-varied #1-80 range and the scarce #311-407 high numbers.
