About Billy Johnson

Signed by New York Yankees scout Paul Krichell out of semipro ball in 1936, Billy Johnson climbed through the Yankees' farm system before debuting in the majors in 1943. A right-handed third baseman, he starred as a rookie, finishing fourth in American League MVP voting and helping the Yankees win the 1943 World Series, in which he drove in the decisive runs with a bases-loaded triple in Game Three. After two seasons (1944-1945) lost to U.S. Army service in World War II, he returned and made the 1947 All-Star team, then belted three triples in the 1947 World Series as New York beat Brooklyn. Nicknamed "Bull" for his aggressive hitting - he said "a man on base is like a red flag to the bull" - Johnson won four championship rings with the Yankees (1943, 1947, 1949, 1950). Traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1951 to clear third base for Gil McDougald, he is pictured here as a Cardinal on his second-series 1952 Topps card. Over nine seasons he batted .271 with 61 home runs and 487 RBI across 964 games. When he died in 2006, he was the last surviving member of the 1943 world champion Yankees.
