About Peanuts Lowrey
Harry Lee "Peanuts" Lowrey (August 27, 1917 - July 2, 1986) was a right-handed outfielder from Culver City, California. The nickname traced to an uncle who, noting his small stature, said he was "no bigger than a peanut." Before baseball he appeared as a child in the "Our Gang" comedies. Lowrey debuted with the Chicago Cubs in 1942 and played 13 big-league seasons for the Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies, batting .273 with 1,177 hits, 37 home runs and 479 RBI over 1,401 games. He was a 1946 All-Star and started all seven games in left field during the Cubs' 1945 World Series run, hitting .310. In 1952 - the year of this Topps card, when he was a Cardinal - he set a major-league record with seven consecutive pinch hits. He later appeared in the 1952 film "The Winning Team" and enjoyed a long career as a big-league coach.
