About Dutch Leonard
Emil John "Dutch" Leonard, born March 25, 1909, in Auburn, Illinois, was a right-handed knuckleball pitcher whose 20-season major-league career spanned 1933 to 1953. He debuted with the Brooklyn Dodgers (1933-1936), then found stardom with the Washington Senators (1938-1946), going 20-8 in 1939 and posting a league-best 2.13 ERA in 1945. Later stops with the Philadelphia Phillies (1947-1948) and the Chicago Cubs (1949-1953)—the team shown on this card—closed out a record of 191-181 with a 3.25 ERA and 1,170 strikeouts. A five-time All-Star (1940, 1943-1945, 1951), he was the winning pitcher in the 1943 All-Star Game. In 1945 he anchored what may be the only all-knuckleball starting rotation in history, alongside Mickey Haefner, Johnny Niggeling, and Roger Wolff. His legacy endures through Hall of Famer Hoyt Wilhelm, who reportedly learned the knuckleball grip from a photograph of Leonard's delivery. He later served as the Cubs' pitching coach (1954-1956).
