About Ron Northey
Ron Northey, the burly right fielder pictured with the Chicago Cubs on card #204, was born April 26, 1920, in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, and reached the majors with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1942 after attending Duke University. A left-handed hitter with a powerful right throwing arm that kept baserunners honest, he played 12 big-league seasons (1942-57) for six clubs: the Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, the Cubs (1950 and 1952), and Chicago White Sox. His finest year came in 1944, when he drove in 104 runs with 22 home runs and 35 doubles. Stout on a 5-foot-10 frame, he was dubbed "Round Ron" by sportswriters, one of whom said his waistline looked like a man who had swallowed a watermelon. Northey became a feared pinch-hitter and was the first big-leaguer to hit three career pinch-hit grand slams (for the Cardinals in 1947 and 1948 and the Cubs in 1950). He retired with a .276 average, 108 home runs, and 513 RBI, later coaching for the Pittsburgh Pirates (1961-63). He died in 1971.
