About Curt Simmons
Curtis Thomas Simmons was a left-handed pitcher signed by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1947 out of Whitehall Township, Pennsylvania, for a reported $65,000 bonus, then among the largest ever given a high-schooler. With Hall of Famer Robin Roberts, he anchored the rotation of the 1950 "Whiz Kids," the Phillies' surprise National League pennant winners, going 17-8 that year. But he was called to active military duty in September 1950 during the Korean War and missed the 1950 World Series, which the Phillies were swept in by the Yankees; he sat out all of 1951 while serving. Returning in 1952, he won 14 games with a 2.82 ERA and led the majors with six shutouts. A three-time All-Star (1952, 1953, 1957), Simmons was released by Philadelphia in 1960 and signed with the St. Louis Cardinals, reviving his career with 15- and 18-win seasons and helping the Cardinals to the 1964 World Series title. He also pitched for the Chicago Cubs and California Angels, finishing a 20-year career at 193-183 with a 3.54 ERA, 1,697 strikeouts, and 36 shutouts. Both Hank Aaron and Stan Musial named him the toughest pitcher they ever faced. He was not elected to the Hall of Fame. Card #203 falls in the fourth series of the 1952 Topps set, printed before the scarce #311-407 high numbers.
