About Richie Ashburn
Richie Ashburn (born 1927, Tilden, Nebraska; died 1997) was a left-handed-hitting center fielder who signed with the Philadelphia Phillies and reached the majors in 1948, immediately leading the National League with 32 stolen bases. Over 15 seasons with the Phillies (1948-1959), Chicago Cubs (1960-1961), and New York Mets (1962), the speedy contact hitter batted .308 with 2,574 hits and 234 steals, and was a spray hitter with just 29 career home runs. He won two NL batting titles (.338 in 1955, a career-best .350 in 1958), led the league in hits three times, and paced the NL in walks four times, earning six All-Star selections. A cornerstone of the 1950 pennant-winning "Whiz Kids," he was nicknamed "Whitey" for his blond hair and "Putt-Putt" by Ted Williams for his speed. After retiring he became a beloved Phillies broadcaster from 1963 until his death. The Veterans Committee elected him to the Hall of Fame in 1995. His card falls in the fourth series, ahead of the scarce #311-407 high numbers.
