About Connie Ryan
Cornelius Joseph "Connie" Ryan (1920-1996) was a New Orleans-born second baseman who left LSU to play for the Atlanta Crackers before Giants manager Mel Ott signed him in 1941. He debuted in 1942 and spent 12 major-league seasons with the New York Giants, Boston Braves (1943-1950), Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies (1952-1953), and Chicago White Sox, batting .248 with 988 hits, 56 home runs, and 381 RBI over 1,184 games. A slick-fielding, combative infielder, he earned a 1944 All-Star selection, collecting two hits in the game. On April 16, 1953, he went 6-for-6 at Pittsburgh, the first Phillie ever to do so. He is also remembered for donning a raincoat in the on-deck circle in 1949 to protest a rain-soaked game. Ryan later coached the 1957 World Champion Milwaukee Braves, was first to congratulate Hank Aaron after home run No. 715, and served as interim manager for the 1975 Braves and 1977 Rangers. His card sits in Series 2, outside both the black/red-back variations (#1-80) and the scarce high-number run.
