About Mickey Vernon
Mickey Vernon signed with the Washington Senators in 1937 and, after a stint in the minors, debuted in the majors on July 8, 1939. A smooth left-handed first baseman, he played 20 big-league seasons across four decades (1939-1960, missing 1944-45 to Navy service), primarily with Washington but also with Cleveland, Boston, Milwaukee and Pittsburgh. Vernon won two American League batting titles: in 1946 (.353) he edged Ted Williams, and in 1953 (.337) his crown denied Al Rosen the Triple Crown by a fraction of a point. A seven-time All-Star, he retired with a .286 average, 2,495 hits, 172 home runs and 1,311 RBI. Nicknamed "Mickey" by an aunt in his hometown of Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania, he was also dubbed the "Gentleman First Baseman" and was President Eisenhower's favorite player. He later became the first manager of the expansion Washington Senators (1961-63) and won a 1960 World Series ring as a Pirates coach. Born 1918; died 2008.
