About Al Sima
Albert Sima (October 7, 1921 – August 17, 1993), a Mahwah, New Jersey native who batted right-handed but threw left-handed, was a pitcher whose professional path ran through the Chattanooga Lookouts, Washington's Southern Association affiliate, after service in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He made his major-league debut on July 28, 1950 with the Washington Senators and, across four seasons, pitched for the Senators (1950–51, 1953), the Chicago White Sox (1954), and the Philadelphia Athletics (1954). Over 100 big-league games he compiled an 11–21 record with a 4.61 ERA, 111 strikeouts, and four saves in 308⅔ innings. Sima owns a memorable footnote: in his final appearance, on September 19, 1954, he was the last pitcher to take the mound for the Philadelphia Athletics in their final home game before the franchise relocated to Kansas City. This 1952 Topps card is his rookie card, a second-series issue outside the scarce high-number run.
