About Sherry Robertson
Sherrard Alexander "Sherry" Robertson, born January 1, 1919 in Montreal, Quebec, was a Canadian-born utility man who broke into pro ball with the Class-B Charlotte Hornets in 1939 and reached the majors with the Washington Senators on September 8, 1940. The nephew of Hall of Fame pitcher, manager and owner Clark Griffith — and brother of future Senators/Twins boss Calvin Griffith — he was part of the family that ran the franchise for decades. A left-handed hitter who threw right-handed, Robertson bounced around the diamond, logging 109 games at second base, 104 in right field and 98 at third. Over ten seasons (1940-41, 1943, 1946-52) with Washington and, after a May 1952 sale, the Philadelphia Athletics, he batted .230 with 346 hits, 26 home runs, 151 RBI and 32 stolen bases in 597 games. His nickname was simply short for his given name, Sherrard. After retiring he became the Senators' farm director, overseeing a system that produced Hall of Famers Rod Carew, Tony Oliva, Jim Kaat and Bert Blyleven, and served as a Twins coach in 1970 before dying that October in a single-vehicle accident in South Dakota. He was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007. As a fourth-series card, #245 falls short of the famously scarce high-number run (#311-407) that includes the iconic Mickey Mantle #311.
