About George Kell
George Kell was a right-handed third baseman from Swifton, Arkansas who reached the majors with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1943 and went on to play 15 seasons (1943-1957). Traded to the Detroit Tigers in 1946, he became the AL's premier third baseman, hitting a career .306 with 2,054 hits, 78 home runs and 870 RBI. His signature achievement came in 1949, when he edged Ted Williams .3429 to .3427 for the American League batting title on the season's final day, denying Williams a third Triple Crown. A superb contact hitter who struck out only 13 times during that batting-title season, Kell was named to 10 All-Star teams and led the AL in hits and in doubles in both 1950 and 1951. He also played for the Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles, and despite his long career he never reached the postseason. After retiring he spent 37 years as a Detroit Tigers broadcaster (1959-1996), for many years alongside Al Kaline, and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1983. This card places him in the 1952 Topps set as a Tiger, the club with which he made his name.
