About Randy Gumpert
A right-handed pitcher from Monocacy, Pennsylvania, Randall "Randy" Gumpert was signed by Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics in 1936 after throwing batting practice for the club while still at Birdsboro High School, and he debuted for the A's that same year. His career spanned ten major-league seasons (1936-1938, 1946-1952) with the Athletics, New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, Boston Red Sox, and Washington Senators. His finest season came in 1946, when he went 11-3 with a 2.31 ERA for the Yankees, and he was on their 1947 World Series championship roster, earning a ring despite not appearing. He notched a career-high 13 wins with 234 innings and 18 complete games for the 1949 White Sox, and a fast start in 1951 earned him a spot on the American League All-Star team, though he did not pitch in the game. Gumpert is best remembered as the pitcher who surrendered Mickey Mantle's first major-league home run, on May 1, 1951 at Comiskey Park, a fitting footnote in a set whose iconic card is the Mantle (#311). He finished 51-59 with a 4.17 ERA and 352 strikeouts over 261 games, then managed in the minors and became a longtime Yankees and Major League Scouting Bureau scout. His card appears in the fourth series, before the scarce high-number run (#311-407).
