About Don Lenhardt
Don Lenhardt was a right-handed-hitting outfielder and corner infielder who signed with the St. Louis Browns organization (recruited by scout Lou Maguolo) and reported to the Class-C Aberdeen Pheasants in 1946. The 6-foot-3 slugger reached the majors with the Browns on April 18, 1950, at age 27, and turned in a standout rookie season, batting .273 with a team-leading 22 home runs and 81 RBI; he drew Rookie of the Year consideration but did not win the award. Over five American League seasons (1950-54) he played for the Browns (two stints), Chicago White Sox, Boston Red Sox (two stints), and Detroit Tigers, finishing with a career line of .271, 61 home runs, and 239 RBI in 481 games. Nicknamed "Footsie" for the unusually narrow width of his feet, Lenhardt had a memorable 1952 season in which he connected for three grand slams. After his playing days he spent more than four decades in the Boston Red Sox organization as a scout and coach, serving as the club's first-base coach from 1970 to 1973. He died on July 9, 2014, at age 91. His card is No. 4 in the 1952 Topps set, part of the low-numbered first series printed in far greater quantities than the scarce high-number cards (#311-407) that make the back end of the set so coveted today.
