About Mel Parnell
Melvin Lloyd Parnell (1922-2012) was a New Orleans-born left-hander who signed with the Boston Red Sox after scouts noticed him strike out 17 batters in just his fifth game pitched, and he spent his entire ten-year major-league career (1947-1956) in Boston. The staff ace of the postwar Red Sox, Parnell went 123-75 with a 3.50 ERA and 732 strikeouts, and he still holds the franchise's career records for a left-handed pitcher in victories, games started, and innings pitched. His finest year came in 1949, when he led the majors with 25 wins (against 7 losses) with a 2.77 ERA and 27 complete games, earning the American League's starting assignment in that summer's All-Star Game; he was named an All-Star again in 1951. Nicknamed "Dusty" by a coach because he was a lowball pitcher who "threw a lot down in the dirt," Parnell capped his career on July 14, 1956, tossing a 4-0 no-hitter against the Chicago White Sox at Fenway Park -- the first no-hitter by a Red Sox pitcher since Howard Ehmke in 1923. He was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 1997. This card #30 is a first-series issue found with both black-back and red-back printing variations.
