About Maurice McDermott

A hard-throwing left-handed pitcher, Maurice "Mickey" McDermott was signed by the Boston Red Sox as a teenager after his father falsified his birth certificate to make him appear older, and he broke in with the Scranton Miners of the Eastern League before debuting in the majors on April 24, 1948. Over 12 seasons (1948-1961) he pitched for the Red Sox, Washington Senators, New York Yankees, Kansas City Athletics, Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals, finishing 69-69 with a 3.91 ERA and 757 strikeouts. His peak came in 1953, when he went 18-10 for Boston, and he was a rare weapon at the plate for a pitcher, batting .252 with nine home runs and often used as a pinch-hitter. Warren Spahn once called him one of the two greatest athletes he ever saw, alongside Ted Williams. McDermott reached the pinnacle in 1956 as a member of the World Series champion Yankees. This second-series card lists him by his given name, Maurice, though fans knew him simply as Mickey. He later famously won a multimillion-dollar Arizona lottery jackpot and published his autobiography before his death in 2003.
