About Bob Chakales
Robert Edwards "Chick" Chakales (born August 10, 1927, in Asheville, North Carolina; died February 18, 2010) was a right-handed pitcher who reached the majors in 1951. Signed by the Philadelphia Phillies at 17 on June 4, 1945, for a reported $7,500 bonus, he broke in with the Cleveland Indians and pitched seven big-league seasons (1951-1957) for Cleveland, the Baltimore Orioles, Chicago White Sox, Washington Senators, and Boston Red Sox, compiling a 15-25 record, 4.54 ERA, and 187 strikeouts over 171 games. A capable hitter, he batted .353 with Cleveland. On June 1, 1954, the Indians traded him to Baltimore for slugger Vic Wertz in what SABR calls the blockbuster deal of 1954. Nicknamed "Chick" since childhood, Chakales later built nearly 200 golf courses, served as president of the Golf Course Builders Association of America, and designed the original TPC Sawgrass. This is his Topps rookie card, from the second series (#'s 81-250).
