About Pete Reiser
A St. Louis native, Harold "Pete" Reiser signed with the Cardinals, but after Commissioner Landis freed him as a minor-league free agent he landed with Brooklyn, debuting for the Dodgers on July 23, 1940. A left-handed outfielder, he exploded in 1941, his first full season, batting a league-best .343 to become the youngest batting champion in National League history (age 22) while also pacing the NL in doubles, triples, runs, total bases, and slugging and finishing second in MVP voting as Brooklyn won its first pennant since 1920. A three-time All-Star (1941, 1942, 1946), the fearless Reiser was nicknamed "Pistol Pete" and was famous for crashing into outfield walls, sustaining repeated skull fractures and concussions; his collisions prompted Ebbets Field to install the majors' first padded outfield walls in 1948. Injuries cut short a career many thought Cooperstown-bound, and he finished with a .295 average, 58 home runs, and 368 RBI over ten seasons. He wound up with the Boston Braves, Pittsburgh Pirates, and finally the Cleveland Indians in 1952, the very team pictured on this card, which marked his final major-league season. On gray stock, card #189 is the rarest of the entire 1952 Topps gray-back run.

White Back / Gray Back Series 3 (cards 131-190)
The third series exists on two different card stocks. The standard issue is on white/cream stock; a much scarcer parallel was printed on gray cardboard. The gray stock was used at the END of the series-3 run — leftover stock run through the same press, not a separate or foreign printing. Gray backs have a duller, gloss-less front and are never found with gum stains.
- White Back: Standard issue. White/cream card stock, normal red-ink back. Sharper, glossier front.
- Gray Back — scarcer: Scarce parallel on gray card stock. Duller, gloss-less front; never gum-stained. #189 Pete Reiser is the rarest of the run; #146 Frank House appears with a pale/yellow Tiger logo. NOTE: long mislabeled 'Canadian' (borrowed from the genuinely-Canadian 1954 Topps issue) — there is no evidence the 1952 grays were a Canadian release. TCDB catalogs these as 'Grey Back' against the normal 'Red Back'.
