About Harry Simpson

Harry "Suitcase" Simpson was a left-handed outfielder and first baseman who broke in with the Philadelphia Stars of the Negro leagues, signed by manager Goose Curry in 1946. After an Arizona tryout, Cleveland general manager Hank Greenberg signed him, and Simpson debuted in 1951 as one of the earliest Black players in the American League. Over eight big-league seasons (1951-1959) he played for the Indians (1951-54), Kansas City Athletics (1955-57 and 1958), New York Yankees (1957), Chicago White Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates (both 1959). His finest year came in 1956 with Kansas City, when he was named an All-Star, batted .293 with 21 home runs, an AL-best 11 triples, and 105 RBI - becoming the first Athletic to top 100 RBI in the city - and finished 11th in MVP voting. Traded to the Yankees in June 1957, he reached that year's World Series against Milwaukee but managed just one hit in 12 at-bats. He retired with a .266 average, 73 homers, and 381 RBI over 888 games. His nickname "Suitcase" was coined by a sportswriter during his Negro-league days, after a "Toonerville Folks" comic-strip character with feet as big as suitcases - a nod to Simpson's size-13 shoes, not, as legend later held, to his many trades. This card is his Topps rookie card. Simpson was born December 3, 1925, in Atlanta and died April 3, 1979, in Akron, Ohio.
