About Larry Doby

Lawrence Eugene "Larry" Doby (1923-2003) broke into pro ball at 17 with the Newark Eagles of the Negro National League, helping them win the 1946 Negro League World Series before Bill Veeck signed him directly to the Cleveland Indians. When he debuted on July 5, 1947 -- just eleven weeks after Jackie Robinson -- Doby became the first Black player in the American League and the second in the modern majors. A power-hitting center fielder, he spent 13 MLB seasons with Cleveland (1947-55, 1958), the Chicago White Sox (1956-57, 1959) and Detroit (1959), batting .283 with 253 home runs and 970 RBI. A seven-time All-Star (1949-55), he led the AL in home runs in 1952 and 1954 and in RBI in 1954, and in Game 4 of the 1948 World Series he hit the first home run by a Black player in Series history, powering the Indians to the championship. In 1978 he became just the second Black manager in big-league history, again with Veeck's White Sox. This #243 card falls in Topps' 4th series, ahead of the scarce high-number run (#311-407). Doby was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998.
