About Dale Mitchell

Dale Mitchell (1921-1987) starred at the University of Oklahoma, where he still holds school batting records, before signing with the Cleveland Indians in 1946 and reaching the majors that September. A left-handed-hitting left fielder, he played 11 seasons (1946-1956), all but a 1956 stint with Brooklyn spent in Cleveland. An exceptional contact hitter, Mitchell batted .312 for his career with 1,244 hits and just 119 strikeouts in nearly 4,000 at-bats. He was a 1948 World Series champion, and in 1949 led the American League in hits (203), singles, and triples (23), earning the first of two All-Star selections (1949, 1952). He was also part of the 1954 Indians club that won an AL-record 111 games and the pennant. Mitchell is best remembered for making the final out of Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series, taking a called third strike from umpire Babe Pinelli that he disputed for the rest of his life.
