About Gus Niarhos
Constantine Gregory "Gus" Niarhos was a right-handed catcher born December 6, 1920, in Birmingham, Alabama. Scout Johnny Nee persuaded him to leave Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn) for pro ball, and the New York Yankees signed him in 1941; after Navy service in World War II he debuted in the majors on June 9, 1946. A light-hitting but sure-handed receiver with an exceptional eye at the plate, Niarhos served as a valuable backup and briefly platooned with a young Yogi Berra in 1948, when Berra split time in the outfield. Over nine big-league seasons he caught for the Yankees (1946, 1948-50), Chicago White Sox (1950-51), Boston Red Sox (1952-53) and Philadelphia Phillies (1954-55), batting .252 with 174 hits, 1 home run and 59 RBI in 315 games while posting on-base percentages that often topped .390. His lone postseason appearance came as a late-inning defensive replacement in the 1949 World Series, which the Yankees won over Brooklyn. Teammates nicknamed the slender catcher "Blood Bank" for needing to put on weight. After retiring he coached for the Kansas City Athletics (1962-64) and managed in the minors, guiding Burlington to the 1965 Midwest League title and earning California League Manager of the Year with Modesto in 1966. He died December 29, 2004. This Red Sox card sits in the 1952 set's second series, well below the scarce high-number run (#311-407) that includes the famous Mickey Mantle #311.
