About Joe Haynes
Joseph Walton Haynes (1917-1967) was a right-handed pitcher who signed with the Washington Senators in 1937 after scout Chick Galloway spotted him pitching in the South Carolina textile leagues, following an American Legion Junior Baseball start in his native Lincolnton, Georgia. He debuted for Washington on April 24, 1939, and worked 14 big-league seasons split between the Senators (1939-40, 1949-52) and the Chicago White Sox (1941-48), finishing 76-82 with a 4.01 ERA and 475 strikeouts over 379 games. His best year came in 1947, when he went 14-6 and led the American League with a 2.42 ERA, and he was named to the 1948 AL All-Star team (though he did not appear in the game). Haynes married Thelma Griffith, niece of Senators owner Clark Griffith, in 1941, and after his release in 1952 he stayed in the organization as its pitching coach (1953-55) and later executive vice president, working alongside brother-in-law Calvin Griffith through the club's 1961 move to become the Minnesota Twins; he died of a heart attack while shoveling snow in Hopkins, Minnesota, in January 1967. This card sits in the low-numbered third series of the landmark 1952 Topps set, Topps' first flagship issue, and is found with both the white and gray back-stock printings collectors track today.

White Back / Gray Back Series 3 (cards 131-190)
The third series exists on two different card stocks. The standard issue is on white/cream stock; a much scarcer parallel was printed on gray cardboard. The gray stock was used at the END of the series-3 run — leftover stock run through the same press, not a separate or foreign printing. Gray backs have a duller, gloss-less front and are never found with gum stains.
- White Back: Standard issue. White/cream card stock, normal red-ink back. Sharper, glossier front.
- Gray Back — scarcer: Scarce parallel on gray card stock. Duller, gloss-less front; never gum-stained. #189 Pete Reiser is the rarest of the run; #146 Frank House appears with a pale/yellow Tiger logo. NOTE: long mislabeled 'Canadian' (borrowed from the genuinely-Canadian 1954 Topps issue) — there is no evidence the 1952 grays were a Canadian release. TCDB catalogs these as 'Grey Back' against the normal 'Red Back'.
