About Sid Hudson
Sid Hudson (1915-2008) was a lanky 6-foot-4 right-handed pitcher who broke in professionally with the Class D Sanford Lookouts in 1938 before reaching the majors with the Washington Senators in 1940. As a rookie he won 17 games and threw two one-hitters, finishing runner-up for Rookie of the Year, and he earned American League All-Star selections in both 1941 and 1942. Hudson then lost three prime years to World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Forces in the Pacific from 1943 to 1945. He pitched for the Senators through mid-1952 and finished with the Boston Red Sox (1952-1954), compiling a 104-152 record, 4.28 ERA, 734 strikeouts, 123 complete games and 11 shutouts over 12 seasons. After retiring he scouted and became a long-tenured pitching coach for the Washington/Texas Rangers franchise and later Baylor University. As a #1-80 card, his 1952 Topps issue exists with both black-back and red-back color variations.
