About Eddie Yost

A patient, sharp-eyed third baseman, Eddie Yost (1926-2012) starred at New York University before Washington Senators scout Joe Cambria signed him for $500 in 1944; he debuted that August at age 17. Yost was Washington's regular at third from 1947 through 1958, later playing for the Detroit Tigers (1959-1960) and the expansion Los Angeles Angels (1961-1962) across an 18-year, 2,109-game career. Nicknamed "The Walking Man" for his uncanny knack of drawing bases on balls, he led the American League in walks six times and retired with 1,614 walks (11th all-time), a .254 average, 139 home runs, 683 RBI, and a .394 on-base percentage. He earned his lone All-Star nod in 1952 - the year of this landmark first Topps flagship card - prompting Casey Stengel's quip, "Every time I look up, that feller is on base." Yost played 838 consecutive games (1949-1955), set an AL career mark for putouts by a third baseman, and held the record for career leadoff home runs until Bobby Bonds surpassed it. He later coached 23 seasons, winning a title with the 1969 "Miracle" Mets.
