About Del Ennis

A Philadelphia native, Del Ennis starred at Olney High School and was signed by Phillies scout Jocko Collins in 1942 before serving in the Navy in the Pacific during World War II. He debuted with his hometown Philadelphia Phillies in 1946 and spent 14 major-league seasons (1946-1959) as a right-handed slugging outfielder, mostly with the Phillies (1946-1956) before later stints with the Cardinals, Reds, and White Sox. A three-time All-Star (1946, 1951, 1955), Ennis was the run-producing anchor of the 1950 "Whiz Kids," leading the National League with 126 RBI while hitting .311 with 31 home runs and finishing fourth in MVP voting as Philadelphia won its first pennant in 35 years (the club was then swept by the Yankees in the World Series). Over his career he batted .284 with 2,063 hits, 288 home runs, and 1,284 RBI. Known to Phillies broadcasters as "Ding Dong Del" and "Ennis the Menace," he held the franchise home run record until Mike Schmidt passed him in 1980. This card appears in the fourth series of the 1952 Topps set, before the scarce high-number run (#311-407) that begins with the iconic Mickey Mantle. Ennis died in 1996.
