About Bruce Edwards
Charles Bruce Edwards (1923-1975), nicknamed "Bull" for his stocky 5-foot-7 frame, was signed off a San Mateo, California tryout camp in 1941 and converted from the outfield to catcher in the minors before World War II service. After a .332 season at Mobile in 1946, the Brooklyn Dodgers bought his contract, and he debuted that June as their regular catcher once Mickey Owen jumped to the Mexican League. His breakout came in 1947, when he hit .295 with 9 home runs and 80 RBIs for the pennant-winning Dodgers, earned an All-Star selection, and finished fourth in National League MVP voting; he caught all seven games of that year's World Series against the Yankees. A right-shoulder/arm injury combined with the rise of Roy Campanella pushed him into a reserve role thereafter, though he made a second All-Star team in 1951. Traded to the Chicago Cubs during the 1951 season (the team pictured on this Series 4 card), he also had later stints with Washington and Cincinnati. Over ten seasons and 591 games he batted .256 with 39 home runs and 241 RBIs, appearing in three World Series (1947, 1949, 1952) with Brooklyn. He died in Sacramento in 1975.
