About Frank Baumholtz
Frank Baumholtz was a left-handed-hitting outfielder and one of only a handful of athletes to play in both Major League Baseball and pro basketball's forerunner leagues. A consensus All-American guard at Ohio University, he led the Bobcats to the 1941 NIT final and won the tournament MVP before serving as a Navy LCI officer in combat at Iwo Jima and Okinawa during World War II. After the war he played pro basketball for the Youngstown Bears (NBL) and Cleveland Rebels (BAA) while breaking into MLB with the Cincinnati Reds in 1947, leading the National League in plate appearances as a 28-year-old rookie. He spent the bulk of his ten-year career (1947-1957) with the Reds and Chicago Cubs, later finishing with the Philadelphia Phillies, and batted .290 with 1,010 hits, 25 home runs and 272 RBI. His finest season came in 1952, when he hit .325 and finished runner-up to Stan Musial (.336) for the NL batting crown despite a torn shoulder ligament and a hand fractured by a Warren Spahn pitch. In a famous good-sportsmanship moment on the season's final day, September 28, 1952, Musial took the mound to face him; Baumholtz stepped in right-handed and hit a sharp grounder ruled an error. His slow Cubs outfields of that era were nicknamed the "Quicksand Kids," and Ohio University retired his basketball jersey (No. 54) in 1995.
