About Eddie Waitkus
Edward Stephen Waitkus (1919-1972), a smooth-fielding left-handed first baseman from Cambridge, Massachusetts, signed with the Chicago Cubs in 1938 after a workout for manager Gabby Hartnett earned him a $2,500 bonus. He debuted in 1941, then served with the U.S. Army's 544th Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment in the Pacific during World War II, seeing heavy combat and earning four Bronze Stars before returning to the Cubs (1941, 1946-1948). Over an 11-season career with the Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies, and Baltimore Orioles, he batted .285 with 1,214 hits, 24 home runs, and 373 RBI, and was named a National League All-Star in 1948 and 1949. His defensive grace earned him the nickname "the Fred Astaire of first basemen." On June 14, 1949, obsessed fan Ruth Steinhagen lured Waitkus to Chicago's Edgewater Beach Hotel and shot him in the chest with a .22 rifle; he survived four operations and the incident is widely cited as an inspiration for Bernard Malamud's 1952 novel The Natural (later the 1984 Robert Redford film). He completed a remarkable comeback in 1950, scoring 102 runs as leadoff man for the pennant-winning Phillies "Whiz Kids" and winning the Associated Press Comeback Player of the Year Award. This Series 3 card (#158) exists with both white and gray back stock, a common variation among mid-series 1952 Topps issues.

White Back / Gray Back Series 3 (cards 131-190)
The third series exists on two different card stocks. The standard issue is on white/cream stock; a much scarcer parallel was printed on gray cardboard. The gray stock was used at the END of the series-3 run — leftover stock run through the same press, not a separate or foreign printing. Gray backs have a duller, gloss-less front and are never found with gum stains.
- White Back: Standard issue. White/cream card stock, normal red-ink back. Sharper, glossier front.
- Gray Back — scarcer: Scarce parallel on gray card stock. Duller, gloss-less front; never gum-stained. #189 Pete Reiser is the rarest of the run; #146 Frank House appears with a pale/yellow Tiger logo. NOTE: long mislabeled 'Canadian' (borrowed from the genuinely-Canadian 1954 Topps issue) — there is no evidence the 1952 grays were a Canadian release. TCDB catalogs these as 'Grey Back' against the normal 'Red Back'.
