About Del Rice

Delbert "Del" Rice (1922-1983), a Portsmouth, Ohio native, was a right-handed defensive catcher whose glove and pitcher-handling kept him in the majors for 17 seasons (1945-1961). Signed by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1941 after scout Frank Rickey discovered him, he debuted with the club in 1945 and served as its regular backstop for roughly a decade. As a rookie he won a World Series ring with the 1946 Cardinals, catching all three of Harry Brecheen's victories over the Red Sox. Later traded to the Milwaukee Braves, he earned a second title on the 1957 championship team. Rice was named a 1953 National League All-Star but an injury kept him off the field, and he went on to catch Don Cardwell's 1960 no-hitter. A career .237 hitter (908 hits, 79 HR, 441 RBI), he also played pro basketball and managed the 1972 California Angels. This card is a Series 2 common, without the scarcity of the #311-407 high numbers or the #1-80 back-color variations.
