About Max Lanier
Hubert Max "Max" Lanier (1915-2007) was a left-handed pitcher who signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1937 and debuted in 1938. Though naturally right-handed, he learned to throw lefty after breaking his right arm as a boy. Over 14 seasons with the Cardinals, New York Giants, and St. Louis Browns, he went 108-82 with a 3.01 ERA, 821 strikeouts, and 21 shutouts. His peak came in the early 1940s: he won the 1943 NL ERA title (1.90) and made the All-Star team in both 1943 and 1944, when he won a career-high 17 games and clinched the World Series against the crosstown Browns, part of two Cardinals championships (1942, 1944). In 1946, at his peak, Lanier stunned baseball by jumping to the Mexican League, drawing a five-year suspension before his 1949 reinstatement. This card shows him with the Giants, where he finished his career. He was inducted into the Cardinals Hall of Fame in 2023.
