About Sheldon Jones
Sheldon Leslie "Available" Jones was a right-handed pitcher born February 2, 1922, in Tecumseh, Nebraska, who reached the majors with the New York Giants in 1946 after Cleveland scout Jim Payton signed him out of Nebraska's amateur and Ban Johnson League ranks in 1941. Over eight big-league seasons (1946-1953) with the Giants, Boston Braves (1952), and Chicago Cubs (1953), Jones went 54-57 with a 3.96 ERA, 413 strikeouts, and 12 saves in 260 games, working as both a starter and a reliever. His best years came in a Giants uniform: 16-8 with a 3.35 ERA in 1948, followed by 15-13 with a 3.34 ERA in 1949. He earned the nickname "Available" from Al Capp's Li'l Abner comic-strip character Available Jones, a nod to his willingness to take any mound assignment. Jones was part of the 1951 Giants' pennant winners and saved Game 3 of that year's World Series in relief of Jim Hearn, posting a 2.08 ERA in the Series before the club fell to the Yankees. He died April 18, 1991, in Greenville, North Carolina. This card sits in the 1952 Topps set's second series, well ahead of the scarce, coveted #311-407 high numbers headlined by the iconic Mickey Mantle #311.
