About Bobby Thomson
Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1923, Bobby Thomson moved to New York as a toddler and signed with the New York Giants for a $100 bonus out of Curtis High School on Staten Island in 1942, later serving as a bombardier in the Army Air Forces during World War II. A right-handed hitter who played the outfield and third base, he debuted in 1946 and spent 15 major-league seasons with the Giants (1946-53, 1957), Milwaukee Braves (1954-57), Chicago Cubs (1958-59), Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles (both 1960). A three-time All-Star (1948, 1949, 1952), Thomson batted .270 with 264 home runs and 1,026 RBI. He is immortalized for the "Shot Heard 'Round the World" on October 3, 1951: with the Giants trailing the Brooklyn Dodgers 4-2 in the ninth inning of the deciding NL pennant playoff game, he launched a three-run walk-off homer off Ralph Branca to win it 5-4, capping a comeback from a 13-1/2-game August deficit. Nicknamed "the Staten Island Scot" for his Scottish birth and Staten Island upbringing, Thomson is a fan favorite in this set. Card #313 sits in the scarce, low-print high-number series (#311-407, the run led by the famous Mickey Mantle #311) and was double-printed, making it one of the more attainable stars of that coveted final series.
