About Jackie Robinson

A four-sport star at UCLA, Jackie Robinson entered pro ball with the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro leagues in 1945 before Branch Rickey signed him to the Brooklyn Dodgers organization that October. His debut on April 15, 1947, broke Major League Baseball's color barrier, making him the first African American in the modern major leagues. Primarily a second baseman (he also manned first, third, short, and the outfield), Robinson spent his entire 10-year career (1947-1956) with Brooklyn, hitting .311 with 1,518 hits, 141 home runs, and 197 stolen bases. He won the inaugural Rookie of the Year award in 1947, then captured the 1949 National League MVP and batting title (.342). A six-time All-Star (1949-1954), he helped the Dodgers win the 1955 World Series over the Yankees. Elected to the Hall of Fame in 1962 on the first ballot, his No. 42 was retired across all of baseball in 1997. This is his scarce high-number card (#312), one card past the famous Mickey Mantle #311 in the low-print 1952 Topps high series, and it was double-printed.

Variations & how to tell them apart

High Number

Series 6 (311-407). Minimally distributed in the fall of 1952 when retailers cut orders — the scarcest and most coveted run in the set, holding Mantle, Robinson, Campanella, the Mathews rookie and more.

Double Print

Cards 311 (Mantle), 312 (Robinson) and 313 (Thomson) were double-printed on the final high-number press sheet, making them modestly more available than their high-number neighbors.

Stitching arrows

The stitching on the number circle (back) points right or left. No print-run difference.
