About Phil Haugstad

Philip Donald Haugstad was a hard-throwing right-handed pitcher from Black River Falls, Wisconsin, signed to the Brooklyn Dodgers organization in early 1946 after his discharge from the Army Air Corps by hometown scout Ernie Rudolph. He climbed quickly through the minors, winning 15 games for the Class C Grand Forks Chiefs in 1946 and starring for the AAA St. Paul Saints, where he made the 1947 American Association All-Star team and posted a 22-win season in 1949 that carried the Saints to their first regular-season title in eleven years. His brother recalled that catchers compared his heavy fastball to Bob Feller's. Haugstad debuted with Brooklyn on September 1, 1947, and picked up his lone big-league victory four days later against the Giants, but he arrived after the roster deadline and was ineligible for the pennant-winning Dodgers' World Series roster. He resurfaced in short relief for Brooklyn in 1951, then was claimed on waivers by the Cincinnati Reds in May 1952, closing a control-plagued four-season MLB career at 1-1 with a 5.59 ERA and 28 strikeouts over 37 appearances. This 1952 Topps card (#198) is his lone flagship-Topps issue and, as an early-1950s low-number rookie, sits well ahead of the scarce high-number series (#311-407) that includes the famous Mickey Mantle.
