About Duke Snider
Edwin Donald "Duke" Snider signed with Branch Rickey's Brooklyn Dodgers organization out of high school in the early 1940s, and after a Navy stint and minor-league seasons at Montreal, Fort Worth, and St. Paul, he debuted in 1947. The left-handed-hitting center fielder played 18 major-league seasons (1947-1964), spending nearly all of them with the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers before closing with the Mets (1963) and Giants (1964). An eight-time All-Star, he strung together five straight 40-homer seasons from 1953 to 1957, led the National League in RBI in 1955 and in home runs in 1956, and finished as MVP runner-up in 1955. Snider anchored the Dodgers' only Brooklyn title in 1955 and their 1959 championship in Los Angeles, and he remains the only player to hit four home runs in two different World Series (1952 and 1955). He batted .295 with 2,116 hits, 407 home runs, and 1,333 RBI. Nicknamed the "Duke of Flatbush" — his father dubbed him "Duke" as a boy for his self-assured swagger — he was immortalized alongside Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle as one of New York's three great center fielders. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1980. On this early-series card #37, Snider appears with the black-back/red-back color variation found on the 1952 Topps low numbers.
