About Chris Van Cuyk

A towering 6-foot-6 left-hander, Christian Gerald "Chris" Van Cuyk was signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers as an amateur free agent in 1946 after serving in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II. Born January 3, 1927, in Kimberly, Wisconsin, he followed his older brother Johnny Van Cuyk to the majors, the two becoming the first big-leaguers out of Kimberly High School. After several seasons in the Dodgers' deep farm system (including Fort Worth, Montreal, and St. Paul), Van Cuyk debuted with Brooklyn on July 16, 1950, and pitched three seasons (1950-1952) entirely for the Dodgers. Over 44 games with 26 starts, the hard-throwing but wild lefty went 7-11 with a 5.16 ERA, 103 strikeouts, and 5 complete games across 160.1 innings, appearing in his final game on August 15, 1952. This card is his rookie card and comes from the first series of 1952 Topps, so it exists with both black-back and red-back print variations; it predates the scarce high-number series (#311-407). Van Cuyk died November 3, 1992, in Hudson, Florida.
