About Wayne Terwilliger

A standout at Western Michigan College, second baseman Willard Wayne "Twig" Terwilliger signed with the Chicago Cubs in 1948 and reached the majors on August 6, 1949, opening his career with eight straight hits. He played nine big-league seasons (1949-1960) for the Cubs, Brooklyn Dodgers, Washington Senators, New York Giants and Kansas City Athletics, batting .240 with 501 hits, 22 home runs and 162 RBI over 666 games. This 1952 Topps card shows him as a Dodger: a June 1951 trade sent him to Brooklyn alongside Andy Pafko (the set's famous #1), but with Jackie Robinson entrenched at second he saw little action and was on the bench when Bobby Thomson hit the 1951 "Shot Heard 'Round the World." A WWII Marine who served in the Pacific at Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima, Terwilliger became a baseball lifer, coaching first base for the Minnesota Twins during their 1987 and 1991 World Series championships and later managing into his 80s. A series-one common, his card exists with both black-back and red-back print variations. He died in 2021 at age 95.
