About Rocky Bridges

Everett Lamar "Rocky" Bridges (1927-2015), born in Refugio, Texas, was a durable utility infielder whose 1952 Topps card (#239, in the fourth series) captures him as a Brooklyn Dodgers rookie. Signed off a streetcar plea by Dodgers scout Tom Downey, he starred in the minors, earning Sally League all-star shortstop honors at Greenville in 1948 (where he also picked up the nickname "Rocky") and finishing second in International League MVP voting at Triple-A Montreal in 1950. He debuted with Brooklyn in 1951, where he backed up future Hall of Famers Pee Wee Reese and Jackie Robinson, then played 11 major-league seasons (1951-1961) for seven clubs, including the Reds, Senators, Tigers, Indians, Cardinals, and Angels. His lone All-Star nod came in 1958 as Washington's sole representative, a distinction he joked about: "They were close to launching an investigation." A career .247 hitter with 562 hits, 16 home runs, and 187 RBI over 919 games, Bridges was beloved far more for his wit and enormous tobacco chew than his bat -- Sports Illustrated in 1964 called him "one of the best stand-up comics in the history of baseball." He later managed in the minors for more than two decades. Unlike the famous high-number cards (#311 Mickey Mantle onward), this fourth-series rookie is not part of the scarce high-number run.
